At Sutherlamb, all our rivers are ephemeral streams. Following sufficient rain, the roar of the water can be heard minutes before first a trickle, then a gush of water can be seen. These episodes are essential in recharging the aquifer and in ensuring the sustainability of farming. These rivers can flow anywhere from several minutes, to several hours! This river bed pictured above is an essential crossing to gain access to our home – once the river flows, we are confined to our home and certain areas of the farm (and town) becomes completely inaccessible.
